Album Review: Apathy - Alien Tongue/It's The Bootleg, Muthaf*****! Vol. 3: Fire Walk With Me
Apathy...easily the most linguistic individual coming out of the Demigodz and one of the many heads of the Army of the Pharaohs made his return to the game after a solid hiatus, for his fans, by dropping 2 projects on the same day. I had the opportunity to sit there and listen to both projects while flying over the pond to the UK. Now I don't recommend you listen to each project individually, but listen to them one after the other. Here is the reason why:
The Alien Tongue album is based upon Apathy's original nickname when he first showed up as a featuring on Jedi Mind Trick's first album, Violent By Design. The album was filled with extremely simple beats but with very raw raps. You can tell that Apathy was young and unexperienced. Now with Apathy with experience, he decided to go back to that mindset. Raps about astronomical diabolical physical concepts over extremely basic but raw beats is what he dropped. He did this for his original fans.
These raps are ridiculous. And I don't really mean that in the best of ways. The raps are really nonsense. They are just meant to follow the Alien Tongue moniker. His old and devout fans will appreciate this.
"Mind astronomical, lyrics phenomenal. Unleash the bloody pages of the dark holy chronicles."He then got his homies to jump in and provide the same sort of lyrics. About celestial beings, and higher learning and similes about video games and other common rap references, while maintaining his Alien-based alter ego.
The production for this album are all simple 4-4 time beats with the simple snare drum and cymbals. The reason why is you're suppose to focus more on the word play than the production. This album is not for everyone. A lot (and I mean maybe 95% of the population) will throw this album out and say its garbage. The raps are really nonsensical. Its hard to keep focus on the raps...but this is what Apathy was going for. He is really taking the Alien mindset and rapping in that format.
This is why I say you should listen to both projects at the same time. It shows how diverse of a rapper Apathy is. The second project then goes into what Apathy actually is. He goes from,
"See on a plane of reality I just don't fit. Super cosmic funkadelic Apathetic the sh**!"to throwing root beers...IN YO GOT DANG FRIDGE!
The lyrics begin to make more sense as Apathy comes with that straight Connecticut demeanor on Volume 3 of his already established Bootleg Tapes. The production is filthy. Solid beats with some unreal samples and heavy DJ cuts. The production is heavy and unreal!
He also features some of his solid running mates. Guys like Celph Titled, Vinnie Paz, Joe Scudda, Styles of Beyond, Ryu, and a mess of other dudes (and cats like Eternia) all show up on the project to provide unreal lyricism. Yet I have to take one song out of the bunch and blow it up!
This joint is just....DUMB! Him and Royce...dear lord!
Now the second project is a mix of joints he's dropped over the years that never made a major project. Its more of a mixtape with freestyles over beats like Love Lockdown, Jockin' Jay-Z and a mess of others. Apathy fans have heard the majority of the songs already, but its now placed in a single project. This is another reason why I reccomend you listen to both projects one after the other. This lets you appreciate Apathy for who he is: a cold, merciless rapper with a lot of strength and presence in his raps. Not only in the word play, but in the deliverance of his performances.
With that all being said, the projects deserve solid play. You'll end up taking out certain joints you really like but then ignore the others. With that being said, the albums on their own are good but together provide a solid picture of who Apathy is and what he offers to the game. This is why, the albums together get the Halle Berry!
